Why You Should Love East Point GA: Tri-Cities

Why You Should Love East Point GA: Tri-Cities

Founded as a railroad terminus in  1870 by 16 families, East Point is the eastern point of the Atlanta and West Point Railroad and today boasts a population of 38,000+ residents. Stations along the route were located in Fairburn, Palmetto, Powells, Newnan, Grantville, Hogansville, Lagrange LongCane, and West Point GA.  Today it is comprised of Colonial Hills, Conley Hills, Semmes Park, Jefferson Park, River Park, Eagan Park, Meadow Lark Estates, Golden Acres, Savannah Walk, Heritage Park, Frog Hollow, & The Villages of East Point.

East Point is located just south of former Fort McPherson of which 330 acres is now Tyler Perry Studios.  Many young and older professionals alike live, work and play in East Point.   Easy access to Marta and other amenities make this a popular destination in which to live.   It is home to Dick Lane Velodrome  which is bordered by the neighborhoods of Semmes Park to the north and Conley Hills to the south and which is the only velodrome in the world with green space inside the track.  With College Park and Hapeville to the South and Southeast, together they comprise the Tri-Cities area of the SW corridor within Atlanta; located just inside the perimeter (ITP if you haven’t heard that yet, you will).  Based on the housing stock, population density, and the proximity of amenities of the area the feeling of the area is dense suburban.

Cost of Living in East Point GA: Compared to the rest of the country, East Point’s cost of living is 86.4% which is 13.6% lower than the U.S. average and 7% lower than the average for GA. The cost of living is relatively the same for groceries, utilities, and health but is relatively less expensive in regards to housing and median home cost.  With the fast growth of West Midtown and the conversion of neighborhoods such as Grove Park, Mozley Park, West Lake into the new Westside Park area as well as the Venetian Hills and Oakland City areas to the north; the cost of living in East Points housing and median home value seems to be on the rise and more in line with the rest of the Atlanta GA area.

East Point Economy: East Point has experienced a job market increase by 2.9% over the last year. Future job growth over the next ten years is predicted to be 7.6% higher higher than the US average of 33.5%.

You may be familiar with the Little Free Library book-sharing movement across neighborhoods worldwide.    Many residents of East Point have spearheaded these local exchanges via an active Facebook Group, helping to build creativity within their communities.   Be sure to stop by any of these little libraries and donate your old books (they are often in need of children’s books) and take what you need for your own reading pleasure.
